Marriage Transcript Introduction

Early in the twentieth century a series of volumes were published containing the marriages from a number of Parish registers. These are known as the Phillimore transcripts and Chapel en le Frith was in Derbyshire Volume 12. It is possible that there will be errors in the transcripts as set out below, either from when they were originally abstracted, or during the printing process or, more probably, when I entered them on the computer! It is important, therefore, to check the entries with the original registers. Also, you will find other important information in the register, for example who the witnesses to the marriage were.  Taken from the Introduction to the transcript:

`The earliest existing Register at the Parish Church of Chapel en le Frith commences 3rd Dec. 1620. there is no trace or sign of any earlier one..................... [there is then a description of the state of the register]........ These abstracts have been made by Mr. William Braylesford Bunting, and are now printed under his supervision by permission of the Rev. J. Clifton Stredder, Vicar of Chapel-en-le-Frith.`

Page 9 of transcript has the comment

"There came to the Chappell from Tideswell & Litton 17 marriages all married by Randle Ashenhurst, esq. Justice of the Peace" This is entered with the date of 5 May 1657.

Page 14 of transcript states:

`The bottom of a leaf containing part of July and part of October in this year (1680) has been cut away. Probably two or three entries in each month.`

NB I have transcribed one marriage entry which Phillimore couldn`t read and added it in the appropriate place.
