Introduction
`The registers of Mellor, which, it should be observed, was anciently a chapelry in tbe parish of Glossop, to the year 1812, consists of four volumes.
Vol. I consists of 110 parchment leaves, measuring 14 x 6 ins. and are enclosed in the original leather-boarded covers. On the whole it is in a fair state of preservation, although the entries in many places are so faded that it is impossible to make them out.
Births and Baptisms, 1629-1728/9 ; Marriages, 1678-1775 or later; Burials, 1624-1727.
The note made by Mr. Olerenshaw concerning the Marriages celebrated by Mr. Hadfield is of some interest. By the operation of Lord Hardwicke’s Marriage Act, Mellor not being a parish church was not a place where Marriages could be lawfully celebrated. It follows,therefore, that the Weddings here from 1754 to 1775 or thereabouts are invalid.
The Marriage entries have been recorded with little regard to chronological order. They are transcribed exactly as found in the register. (I have put them in order in this transcript. MW)
Vol. II consists of 33 parchment leaves, measuring 15 1/2 x 6 1/8 ins., and are bound in leather-boarded covers.
Baptisms, I 728-1765 ; Marriage, 1752 ; Burials, 1728/9 -1774. The entries have been well made and are distinct.
Vol. III. consists of 86 paper leaves, measuring 10 x 7 1/4 ins., enclosed in parchment-boarded covers, and is in excellent condition.
Baptisms, 1763-1804
Vol. IV. consists of 88 parchment leaves (one of which is blank), measuring I3 1/2 x 7 1/2 ins., and are enclosed in leather-boarded covers. It is in excellent condition.
Baptisms, 1805-1812; Marriage, I771;
Burials, 1763-1812. On the outside cover is written : “Register of Burials in the Chapel and Chapel Yard of Mellor.”
These extracts have been made by Mr. Leopold Choice, and are now printed by leave of the Rev, R. Eubank, Vicar of Mellor.
